...and at least 45 currently up for auction. I’d call that a successful launch. Good for Doug - wonder at what point he’ll slow down his pace on YouTube. I assume the grind of that got him thinking about other sources of income.

Some YouTubers seem to be developing contingencies in the event that YT changes their compensation models, or starts banning more types of channels. I know Dr. Matt started that outside promotional products company to supplement YT income, along with adding extra channels in case the main two get shut down.

Yeah, it’s way too risky to put all your eggs in the YouTube basket.

Farah is about to open a high-end car storage/club.

Depends on the car. Looks like there are deals to be had. I forget the Oppo, but one guy here tried listing with them, but they couldn’t agree on the reserve, so it sounds like Doug and Co. are working hard to keep the reserve numbers in check so cars sell more often than not.

Good for Doug. Using Youtube to open another business is kinda like a Youtuber retirement plan. I can imagine he’ll start winding down making as many videos in a few years. Youtube is way too volatile . This recent adpocolypse has people scrambling.

His last post on AutoTrader is from March - wonder if that gig is over.

Its always been a smart move in the entertainment business, anyway. Dr. Dre didn’t make $800 million just on album sales, Jimmy Buffett didn’t get to $550 million from concert tickets, and Jay Leno sure as hell didn’t get all of his $400 million from the Tonight Show.

Almost definitely. I think Hoovie said something in one of his videos about Autotrader basically cutting back Oversteer when the Pandemic got serious in March. It also used to have a headline that it was commentary from essentially Doug and friends. Now it doesn't mention Doug at all.

yep

I’m not really a fan of Leno’s schtick (he’s much more likable as a car guy), but I was always with this:

Leno was smart about how he handled both paychecks, too. He banked the bigger one and lived off the smaller one . When he was first starting out, that meant saving the money he made working at a car dealership and spending what he made as a comedian.

“Then I got to the point where the comedy money was, like, five times the other money, so I decided to flip it around and save the comedy money,” Leno says. “I would always spend the lesser amount of what the two were.”

He continued relying on this strategy even after he started hosting “The Tonight Show” in 1992. “I pretended as if I didn’t even have the ‘Tonight Show’ job,” says Leno, who instead, lived off the money he earned doing comedy gigs on the side. “You know, when you start making money, you get lazy. I wanted to make sure I always had that hunger, so I never looked” at his TV money. “It would go directly into a bank.”

After 22 years on the job, he accumulated “a nice little nest egg,” he adds. Even today, Leno still does two to three comedy gigs a week, or “210 jobs a year outside of whatever else I’m doing.” After all, “if you do something and it works, then keep doing it.”

I think the majority of Leno’s money ($300 million +) is from the tonight show and stand- up , with the original NBC checks still sitting in the bank . Obviously he does the Garage thing and some endorsing, but I would thi nk that mainly covers the costs of buying/maintaining his fleet. I could be wrong but I don’t see him flipping many cars or doing much else yet that would result in Tonight-show levels of income.

Kind of expecting him to eventually open a Petersen-like museum at some point with that collection, which to your point is appreciating and adding significantly to his net worth.

I don’t believe he’s ever sold a car or bike after he got famous - other than for specific charity purposes , and maybe not for a bit before that, even. He still has the Buick he lived in for awhile when he first got to LA.

He always claimed he never spent a dime of his Tonight Show income during his tenure as host, and lived totally off his standup comedy money and investments.

Seems to be splurging a bit more since semi-retirement, though. Buying t hat house in Newport, RI is something I couldn’t have envisioned him doing when he was still hosting.

And BTW, I think he still made a pretty smart buy - $13.5 million for this place seems like a bit of a steal.

And in freaking Newport, too! He didn’t technically buy the whole thing, though. It was subdivided into 5 condos in the ‘80s, and he bought 4 out of the 5 and recombined them. There’s still one unit in one of the wings that’s separately owned .

what???? That’s crazy. Although all he’ll have to do is stand outside and do his act each night, and they’ll be a for sale sign by September.

(just not a fan of his standup, or his gig on the Tonight Show.  But I can get through a Garage as long as the topic is somewhat interesting )

Man I was  sad to sell it but I’m glad I sold my SS sedan when I did.  I had a 2016 with quite a few more miles on that I got rid of last year for a lot more than the one that sold there.

It was a great car. The paint quality sucked (Not quite as bad as Tesla, but Holden paint sucks too) but I never had any real issues. I had squealing br akes which were a TSB (needed more copper paste from the factory) and other than that it was just oil changes and brake pads. Th e transmission was great (T6060) and it sounded great with the exhaust opened.

In the end I got rid of it because my commute changed and I was driving it too much in lame conditions. I was spending $ 420 a month in fuel to sit on the freeway and putting 20k+ miles a year on it. I sold it before the resale would tank. In the end I drove it 3.5 years and racked up over 50k miles and sold it for 39k. Not a bad run for new car depreciation. I bought at 46 plus taxes so overall I spent about 21k including taxes and excluding gas to drive it. I’d do it again.

No worries. It was one of those adulting decisions you have to make every so often . The good news is that it was a decent financial decision. We put solar on the house last year and the system is large enough to cover our house usage as well as charging the Tesla every night. Its all paid for so getting the Tesla brings down the payback period as well as not costing me anything new to run. When the Tesla is paid off it will be the cheapest car possible to run. Plus I ended up getting over 5k back in rebates on the car and bought on a great dip in the Tesla pricing model for the Performance version.  I did buy it after they got rid of EAP though and that would have been handy.

Nicely done. How long is the payoff for the solar system you installed? I’ve thought about this, but not sure if the sun is strong enough here to make it worth it.

Hope your Tesla lasts you many years.

But your really should’ve bought TSLA stock instead. LOL

Kinja'd!!! AdamVIP > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com

Solar payoff was about 9 years without the Tesla and about 6 years with it. Its warrantied for 25 years and we plan on being in the house at least 20. We should have a nice profit by the time we move.

I do own some TSLA.  I hear its up again today too.
